Detroit: Beautiful and Bust

So today came the news that the city of Detroit has filed for bankruptcy. It will mean that in future the stricken state will have difficulty raising cash, presumably much needed to stimulate economic growth in the area.

I have never visited Detroit but it sounds and looks like a place with a heart and a soul. It's no shiny metropolis or picture postcard. It has seen things, and it has endured suffering. I think I am partly drawn to it because I am from Swansea in South Wales. Swansea was once an important shipping port and at the heart of tin and copper mining. In fact it earned the nicknamed "Copperopolis". Now it is a city trying to reinvent itself as a tourist town. Its people, the great majority, are not wealthy and jobs are scarce. I imagine this is the case in Detroit too, once the proud centre of the nation's automobile industries.

There was a great advert by Chrysler which really should go back on the air following this news. It is a defiant rallying cry - we are not beaten, we will fight on.

The great thing about towns and cities that have suffered is the art that comes out of them - music, poetry, paintings, photography. Perhaps this is because artists are often said to produce their best work when they are anguished or have dark subject matters. There have been some beautiful art projects focusing on empty and abandoned homes in the suburbs of Detroit. Kevin Bauman's photography project entitled 100 Abandoned Houses was his attempt to document the forgotten areas of the city - often areas which were once inhabited by the wealthy, now in sad states of disrepair. Dreams that once were.

Another interesting project focusing on abandoned houses is Ice House Detroit. Artist Gregory Holm and architect Matthew Radune sprayed an abandoned house with gallons of water so that the entire house froze. The house is meant to symbolise the contemporary state of Detroit. Read their blog about the project here.

Bankrupcy seems to be when a person/state/country reaches rock bottom. So Detroit, the only way is up. Maybe this is an exciting time. A time of crisis and change. Certainly it should make the US government sit up and take notice.

So Detroit, good luck. I look forward to seeing what you give the world next.

Black Cab Sessions- the most intimate gigs ever.

Today one of the organisers from Black Cab Sessions came to give a talk to my agency. If you haven't already heard of them and checked out their website then the idea is simple. Bands and musicians get in a black cab to give a stripped back extremely intimate gig that is filmed and put online. The organisers of these sessions try to pick interesting people with something new to give - whether they are very famous or unsigned and unknown. It has also meant they have turned down some pretty big names. In this process they have discovered many artists who have been seen on the platform and snapped up by record companies. This happened so often that Black Cab Sessions has now set up their own record company called BCS.

Watch this video to get a little taster:

The idea has also spawned a TV program which saw the 5 guys running Black Cab Sessions travel to New Orleans and New York to find musicians and talk to them about their areas and what makes them musically special.

Take a look at the website. It is full of gems - so far I have enjoyed sessions by I blame Coco, Richard Thompson, Death Cab for Cutie and Bonnie Price Billy. There really is something for everyone.

Things they say in LA

In LA my English-isms are a constant source of amusement for everyone. Occasions when everyone has found me hilarious include:

When I say "herbs" with a h.
When I as HD like "haych dee"
When I say jacket potato (they say baked potato)
When I say he's a minger, that's minging

They also get confused when I ask where the loo is, say "I'm flagging" (tired) and
Nor do they understand "brass monkeys" (cold), chav or townie.

I in return find the things they say funny...

that's rad
bad ass
that's sick (really good)
that's dope (really good)
that's frickin awesome dude
That's retarded (really good)
that melts my face that's so rad
put a period at the end of that sentence
Oh totally - I totally get you, I'm like totally psyched, totally cute, totally, oh you should totally get that, like totes!
Shall I start a room for you? (as in a changing room for the clothes you are buying)

Anyway I will note more as I hear them.

LA adventures

The best thing about being in LA with work are the restaurants you get to go to.

I've particularly enjoyed them on this visit to Santa Monica and even made it up to Hollywood for a dinner in Soho House Hollywood. Incidentally the only celeb I saw is one of the girls from The Only Way Is Essex. If you are American and reading this it's like The Hills.
Anyway I've eaten a lot of sushi. I've enjoyed Sushi Samba (sashimi to die for), Sushi Roku (swishy) and Hama Sushi (amazing lobster miso).
I ate steak in Boa (just amazing melting meat and the sides..oh my mouth waters) and tuna steak in Shutters (simple and delicious). The pizza I had in Stella Rosa was the yummiest that's ever tickled my tastebuds.

There have been some bum notes. But really Santa Monica is a foodie heaven.

So the only problem is now I am well and truly spoilt. I already have to make my own guacamole in the UK...I don't fancy trying to cook my own Lobster!

Back to Lala Land and my first ever Thanksgiving.

Hello hello

It's been a while hasn't it. It hasn't been that my brain has frozen into a green bean that fell out of a bag of green beans in the freezer and got stuck to the freezer drawer. Oh no. It's actually that I've been leading a very hectic life recently. This isn't like when you told the teacher your dog ate your homework. I am not just making up excuses.

Work has been all-consuming. I've had a huge project. It's been very exciting but stressful. In fact it is the best project I have ever worked on. I'm not going to say this to my boss (until I get drunk at the Christmas party) because I'll sound like a loser. Noone wants to be that excitable. But I'm really proud of what we have produced. It's not finished yet of course, so I'm probably jinxing the whole thing.

The project has meant that I have spent the last 2 and a half weeks in LA. I currently reside in a rather swanky hotel. It was where Shane Ward filmed a music video. Shane Ward? Come on you remember him from X factor. Louis Walsh says he's a big star!!

During this time I also enjoyed my first Thanksgiving dinner. My two colleagues and I were lucky enough to bag the company of two of the LA Creatives for a dinner in a cozy old fashioned restaurant where we had turkey, bread pudding, mash, corn, greens and even an apple crumble for desert. Afterwards we had a pyjama party (minus the pjs) watching classic movies like Beetlejuice and Sexy Beast under duvets lying on cushions on the floor. It was like being 15 again.

Lovely work friends and I.

yummy.

So thank you America for having me. I liked your holiday very much.

From Detroit

I guess it's a bit late to be talking about Super Bowl adverts. But I just saw this. And I love it.

Now I'm not American. But this advert taps into the same feeling of huge worth and potential that Alicia Keys's New York does. I get emotional and almost awed watching it. I love the pride it conveys about Chrysler's heritage and in Detroit as a whole. Detroit has its problems from what I have heard. Large areas are deserted as the population has rapidly decreased. In fact a survey in 2009 said that 10% of the city's houses were vacant. So I guess the advert has an added sense that the people who stayed in Detroit are believers. They grew up in an area that made cars and cars are in their blood.

It also does a good job of telling you that Chrysler is a quality car made by people who live in a country built for cars and who care about luxury. I'm not American but this advert made me want to be. And what's more. I made me want to buy a Chrysler 200.

Venis Canals, Venice Beach....n...some other LA stuff

Howdy folks (do I sound American yet?). I've started to really enjoy my time out here in LA. Which is a good thing...it's my 20th day! On Friday night I decided to go it alone and go to a sushi restaurant. I spoke to concierge and they suggested Wabi Sabi on Abbot Kinney. Apparently it was some first friday of the month celebration on the street - an added bonus. So I rocked up to Wabi sabi and asked for a seat on my lonesome - they gave me one at the sushi bar next to a group of girls. They turned out to be really lovely and adopted me for the night. Cheryl, Ruby and Jackie - thank you all! I followed then to a wine bar called "The Other Room" where I got rather too drunk. The next day was hell, but the fact that I had had a proper night out, made friends and did it all by myself really made me feel so much better. Sunday i decided to exploit my new found "go it alone" confidence and set off bright and early for Venice. I walked all around the lovely canals taking pictures and looking at architecture while burning my shoulders. It was perfect. I loved it. Then I headed down to Venice beach and marvelled at all the freaky people. Before I knew it I'd walked all the way to Santa Monica. Walking back down Main street I stopped at the Victoria (Old Victorian...or something) and watched a bit of the Super Bowl. Then I walked all the way back to the Ritz and got there just in time to see the sunset. Perfect. in the evening I took myself for a romantic dinner in The Cheesecake factory and sat on the veranda with fairy lights and the boats bobbing. It was magical.

Lonely in LA LA

Hey guys. Last night I attempted to go for a walk around Venice, only to be told that at 5pm it wasn't safe. The concierge kindly put me in a cab and told the driver "take her to 3rd street promenade". The words "I don't want to go there" didn't quite get out of my mouth so that's where I ended up. 3rd street and main street are the only places in LA I have actually been already. So anyways there I was. London college was sleeping all day and didn't want to come. I was too lonely to shop and every time a shop assistant wasn't super nice to me I wanted to cry (like when I was looking for a medium in a top and a shop assistant came over and said "excuse me Mam, but we only carry size small"). So I decided to make the most of London College's absence and eat sushi. He can't eat sushi coz he's allergic. That means I'm missing out on all the amazing sushi in LA (makes you realise how utterly horrible and crap Yo Sushi really is...mind you I already knew that). So I went to Sushi Roku in Santa Monica. By my self. I sat at the end of the bar and drank cocktails and ordered lobster rolls, salmon sashimi (dreamy), spicy scallop rolls and eel sushi. YUM! It was kinda sad I guess but i enjoyed it.

Anyway here's some more pics from my trip. This is my breakfast scene - looking over the marina at marina del ray

slightly drunk right now post

Hi lovely readers.
I am a little under the effects of a bottle of red I shared in a lovely Tapas restaurant in Santa Monica. But nevertheless I wanted to write a little post. I had a lovely day today. Had a little swim in the hotel pool, after a little cycle in the gym, then went into work for 4 hours. But you know its fine working when you like the people you are working with. The creative team out here are totally great. And after we finished for the day, two of them took us out for tapas. It was on a street named Abbot Kinny (or something).
Anyways here are some pics from my trip so far. Mostly from the plane. We had to land in Goose, Canada because a guy got sick with stomach pains. I know it's cruel but I get stomach pains so bad that I can't move sometimes and I don't go making planes land! Anyways it took us 3 hours to get back in the air.

Think this was snow not cloud.

De-icing the runway - eat your heart out Gatwick and Heathrow.

On the runway - Goose - it's pretty quiet looking

Oh and I took all these shots on my iPhone4 - pretty good for a phone camera huh?

Out in LA LA land again

Hello people. I am out in LA for the second time. Even got to fly first class. It really wasn't that spectacular and there were no celebs. I ask you...without the celebs, what's the point? Honestly when everyone else goes first class they get to sit by Tim Burton. I did get to lie on a flat bed and had very attentive flight stewards n stewardesses. And I got a white table cloth and champers on request. Unfortunately as I was going straight into the office I didn't fancy the hangover so I mostly declined alcohol. Boooo!

Well I'm going back business so maybe I'll know what the ups of first class really are after that.

I'm in my hotel room now which is rather swanky. But I miss Fiance. Who is actually in NYC. Must tell him to water my plants when he gets home. Poor Boris and Manwell are wilting by the second.

Tomorrow I don't actually have to work very much so I could take a taxi somewhere. I have no idea where to go. If anyone has a recommendation please let me know!

Over and out.

New experiences in the US of A

I have just ordered Iced Chai Tea Latte. It's my second ever - someone offered me one yday and today I know what to say to the coffee van. I am very excited because I don't like coffee so now I have something that sounds equally complex and looks equally as indulgent. Plus it tastes great.

In fact come to think of it i think I have been making my own version of this drink - I make it when I'm having trouble sleeping and it was my solution to the fact that hot chocolate has caffeine in. First I heat milk, then I add a squeeze of honey, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Other things that I have sampled during my stay include -

The breakfast burrito (a little dirty but not as dirty as the chilli burger by far),
The Billion Dollar Bite (bacon, cheese, tomato, egg in toasted bread - SO GOOD! )
Italian Soda - (refreshing mix of fruit juice and soda water)
Chocolate with sea salt in
Organic mint ice-cream that actually tastes and smells like garden grown mint
The mint Oreo cookie (better than the regular variety as the mint lifts it)

Other weird things that I have noticed or learnt in Santa Monica:

1. avocado is a breakfast food too. In fact avacado can be featured in every meal.
2. Don't ask where the loo is, they won't understand. And don't clarify by saying "toilet" - it's so crass! it's bathroom or restroom.
3. sales assistants ask if they can "open a room" for you. never heard that before.
4. Dogs are better behaved - they are soooo socialised in LA
5. Everyone is better looking than in England - hey you could be a model, hey you too, and the guy carrying equipment on set, and the guy serving you in the food van. Wow.
